iRIS-2020 was originally planned to be held in Bahrain in October 2020. But with the onset of Covid-19-related travel and social mixing restrictions, and a corresponding slump in the extractive industries among many others, it was decided to hold the event as a virtual meeting in November 2020.

Despite this being the inaugural event, over 40 abstracts were received and approved by the Advisory Committee chaired by Alan Butcher of GTK and Abdullah Sultan of KFUPM. This resulted in a packed program spanning more than sixteen hours each day (the first three sessions each day were repeated at the end of the day for the benefit of attendees from the Americas). With many members of the Committee serving as session moderators, the event ran relatively smoothly despite some technical glitches that were inevitable given the newness of the virtual platform technology.
